The Koala Preservation Society of N.S.W., Inc. runs the hospital as a charitable organisation, dependant on contributions in order to stay open. Every year, some two hundred to two hundred fifty koalas are seen in the hospital. Some never leave, while some are nursed back to health and then released back into the nature reserve, or back to wherever they lived before their injury. It seems that cars/trucks and dogs are responsible for most of the accidents koalas are involved in, and often, koalas are brought here for treatment from miles away. Koalas also suffer from chlamydia, and the koala hospital in Port Macquarie is working with the University of Sidney in order to do research on this and other koala diseases.<br />

There are ten outside runs for those koalas whose condition allows for them to be outside. Inside the hospital, you will find six to eight intensive care units set up for these precious little balls of fur. Visitors are welcome at the koala hospital 365 days a year, and visitors are welcome. You may, however, want to time your visit so that you can take advantage of the Feed, Walk, and Talk tour that goes on every afternoon starting at 3 PM. These tours are led by hospital volunteers, who will lead visitors through the outside yards and describe what the hospital is doing for each koala. The volunteers also know the history of each koala, and why they are at the hospital. While the tour is being conducted, you will see other hospital volunteers feeding the koalas their usual diet of several different varieties of eucalypt leaves.<br />
